ASEAN: The Association of Southeast Asian Nations is a geo-political and economic organisation of ten countries located in Southeast Asia, which was formed on 8 August 1967 by Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore and Thailand. Since then, membership has expanded to include Brunei, Burma (Myanmar), Cambodia, Laos, and Vietnam. Its aims include accelerating economic growth, social progress, cultural development among its members, protection of regional peace and stability, and opportunities for member countries to discuss differences peacefully.

Cabinet Clears 900 Mhz, 1800 Mhz Spectrum Auction Prices

The Union Cabinet has approved the finalization of the reserve price for auction of spectrum in 1800 MHz band for all service areas and for 900 MHz band in Metro service areas of Delhi, Mumbai and Kolkata.

The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs (CCEA) Monday cleared spectrum prices for 900 megahertz (MHz) and 1,800 Mhz, an official said in New Delhi.

The Telecom Commission had earlier suggested fixing a minimum Rs.1,765 crore per MHz as the price for pan-India spectrum (22 circles) in the 1,800 MHz band, 15 % higher than the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India’s (TRAI) suggested rate of Rs.1,496 crore

Cabinet Clears Bill For Creation of Telangana State

New Delhi: The Union Cabinet on Thursday cleared a parliamentary bill for creation of Telangana state having 10 districts.

Dropping a controversial move to add two districts of Rayalaseema to Telangana, which was opposed by various stakeholders, the cabinet, presided over by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, approved a draft reorganisation bill based on recommendations of Group of Ministers (GoM).

Also rejecting the demand of leaders of Seemandhra (combined Rayalseema and coastal Andhra regions) for making Hyderabad a union territory, it stuck to the earlier decision that the city would be a common capital for 10 years.

RBI Eased Companies’ Foreign Funding Norms For Infra Projects

The Reserve Bank of India on 3 December 2013 eased norms for companies raising foreign funds for infrastructure projects.

The new norms will help Companies to raise funds through the External Commercial Borrowing (ECB) route for their infrastructure projects through their holding firms or core investment firms. This will enable them to arrange finances for their projects faster and strengthen the flow of resources in the sector.

The RBI Eased Companies also stated that such funds should be used in special purpose vehicles (SPVs) for a specific project. Presently, the SPVs are allowed to bring in ECB funds for infrastructure projects, while there were restrictions for parent firms in doing so. The Reserve bank, however, has listed a series of conditions to avail this facility.

PPP in irrigation projects, user charges, new law necessary to mitigate impending crisis

At a time when experts are warning that increasing water scarcity in the country is posing a major threat to economic growth and political stability, the 12th five-year plan, which is likely to be cleared by full planning commission on Saturday, will give special thrust to deal with the issue.

12th Plan To Be Crucible For Solving Water Woes

Among the proposal being worked on is levy of user charges for water and private sector participation is irrigation projects. Other measures include improving data collection, establishing national monitoring authority, encouraging dry land farming, drip irrigation and new legal framework for water, particularly on the use of ground water resources.

The 12th Plan will also evolve a strategy on recharging overexploited aquifers and strengthening sewage system, particularly in semi-urban and rural areas.

Angela Merkel Awarded Indira Gandhi Peace Prize For 2013

President of Germany (Chancellor) Angela Merkel has been selected for the Indira Gandhi Prize for Peace, Disarmament and Development, 2013. The award is given by the “Indira Gandhi Memorial Trust” and an International Jury selects the awardee. The jury for this year was headed by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh.
